The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is the science agency of the Department of Interior.  One of its primary missions is to monitor and assess the magnitude and impact of natural hazards to protect against property loss, environmental destruction, and loss of life.  The USGS has real-time data capabilities for monitoring earthquakes, floods, droughts, water-quality hazards, and hurricane surge.  This presentation will discuss how emergency managers (EM) can have direct access to this information, the partnerships that USGS have with other Federal hazards agencies, and  how all of this is beneficial to the local EM's mission.

Local Hazard Analysis & Situational Awareness

Emergency managers are tasked with maintaining situational awareness of and determining the existence of potential or ongoing hazards that pose a threat to life safety or property within their jurisdictions. A myriad of tools and technologies are available that support this monumental and ever present task. This workshop will provide an overview of many of the tools and technologies that are available to emergency managers - many of which are free or offered at a minimal cost - and the capabilities they offer. Easy to use and very capable tools receiving the spotlight include: Google Earth, iNWS, and ArcGIS. Additionally, the newly developed situational awareness platform for Georgia will be introduced: the Georgia Online Disaster Awareness Geospatial System (GODAWGS) - a system based upon the Virginia Department of Emergency Management's VIPER.

Emergency Planning for Special Needs Community

Managing Search Operations
(8-Hours)

This class is for agency personnel tasked with the initial response to a lost or missing person incident. Search is an emergency and time critical. Proper decision making and wise application of resources determine successful outcomes. This class will include discussion of the proper organization, planning and operation of a search. Topics included will be, search theory, the search sequence, lost person behavior, reflex tasking, confinement and proper use of resources. The class will consist of lecture, classroom exercises, and video presentations. Recommended prerequisites include ICS 100,200 and, 700. Students should also have the ability to read and use topographical maps.
